25 October | Museum of the Order of St John | London | EC1M 4DA
The spectacular visual appeal of Malta has an enduring attraction to Hollywood. Much of this is down to the Order of St John, an ancient religious brotherhood that ruled the island for over 250 years and built incredible defences, palaces, and churches. In 2018, Valletta is the European Capital of Culture. To celebrate this link, Venture Cinema and the Museum of the Order of St John are bringing you 3 magical nights of films shot in Malta, screened in the historic panelled Chapter Hall.
On 25th October we will be screening the legendary action epic, Gladiator. When a Roman General is betrayed, and his family murdered by an emperor's corrupt son, he comes to Rome as a gladiator to seek revenge.
Doors open at 5.30 for a 6pm start. There will be an interval, during which you can explore the galleries and learn more about the history of the Order of St John, as well as discovering more about the stunning locations on the islands of Malta, Gozo and Comino, featured in these films. On arrival and during the interval there will be a bar serving Maltese wine, beer, soft drinks and snacks for you to enjoy as you browse the galleries and enjoy the film. Spaces are limited so book your tickets in advance to avoid disappointment.
The Museum tells the story of the Order of St John, whose story spans almost 1000 years, from caring for sick pilgrims in 11th century Jerusalem and defending crusader castles, through to its modern-day role with St John Ambulance. The Museum’s fascinating collections are housed in a beautiful 16th century gatehouse at the original 12th century headquarters of the Order.
Spaces are limited so book your tickets in advance to avoid disappointment.
This event is part of the Museum at Nights Festival.
